From the trauma of the transatlantic slave trade to the political disillusionments of the modern era, West Indies, directed by Med Hondo, paints the history of the Antillean people. A history marked by revolts, resilience, and an ongoing quest for liberation.
Set on a reconstructed slave ship inside a Citroën factory, the film jumps freely between past and present to draw a parallel between France’s previous colonial crimes and the country’s insidious neocolonial ambitions in the modern era. Blending political commentary with Caribbean rhythm through vibrant musical sequences in French and Creole, the film exposes enduring systems of exploitation while simultaneously celebrating the people’s resistance and cultural identity in the face of displacement.
