We find ourselves in Paris in 1899. Christian, a young writer, dreams of achieving his big breakthrough. Together with a troupe of bohemian artists, he manages to trick his way into putting on a show for the infamous nightclub Moulin Rouge. Their undertaking is complicated, however, when Christian falls madly in love with Satine, the Moulin Rouge’s biggest star, who is also courted by the show’s powerful and jealous financier.
In 2001, Baz Luhrmann brought the musical genre into the 21st century with his jukebox approach. Opulent sets, playful camera movements, and vibrant colours give Moulin Rouge! a magnetic pull that audiences can’t resist; nor would they want to! The covers of well-known songs ensure that you immediately feel at home in the MTV aesthetic, and Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman magnificently embody the star-crossed lovers. A film that makes you believe in true love.
